Transportation and Parking

How are you coming to the conference?

By Air

The Washington area is served by three major airports: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI), and Dulles International Airport (IAD). Helpful information about National and Dulles can be obtained at the website of the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority: http://www.mwaa.com and for BWI at www.bwiairport.com. There are several ways of traveling to the conference hotels from each airport.

From Dulles

Taxi: A taxi will cost slightly more than $50 from the airport to either conference hotel. For return service to the airport, call 703-661-6655 or consult the ground transportation page of http://www.mwaa.com.

SuperShuttle: The SuperShuttle (a.k.a. The Blue Van) will take you from Dulles to your DC destination for about $27 one way. Follow airport signs for Ground Transportation and buy your ticket on the lower level before exiting the terminal. For detailed information, call 1-800-WASHFLY, or go to http://www.supershuttle.com, or call 1-800-BLUE-VAN.

Washington Flyer/Metro: An economical alternative to cab or shuttle is to take the Washington Flyer Bus to the West Falls Church Metro Station. The cost of the bus is $9 one-way and $16 round-trip. Take the Metro to Metro Center and change to the Red Line heading for Shady Grove. Exit at Dupont Circle and follow the bus directions below. The Metro will cost about $4 (depending on the time of day). For detailed schedule information and maps, check the Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority websites: http://www.wmata.com or www.metroopensdoors.com, or call 202-637-7000.

From National

Taxi: A cab from National will cost $14 to the Conference Center and $15.80 to the Holiday Inn. Call 703-417-0981 or consult the ground transportation page of www.mwaa.com.

Metro: National Airport is very close to the city. There is a Metro Station at the airport. You can take the train to Dupont Circle and from there a bus to Georgetown (see directions below for buses from Dupont Circle).

SuperShuttle: See above under Dulles. The fare from National is $12, not much less than a taxi.

From BWI

Taxi: A cab from BWI will cost about $74. Call 410-859-1100 or consult www.BWIAirportTaxi.com.

SuperShuttle: The SuperShuttle runs from BWI to Georgetown. The cost of a single trip is $35. Follow signs for Ground Transportation. See information above for Dulles.

Amtrak or MARC Trains: Amtrak (1-800-USARAIL or http://www.amtrak.com) and MARC (http://www.mtamaryland.com) trains run regularly from BWI into Washington DC’s Union Station. There is a free shuttle service from the airport to the train station. Fare for Amtrak is $12-19/one way for a coach ticket, on local service train, but $29-34 for a ticket on an Acela Express Train.  MARC trains cost $6/one way. From Union Station, you will have to take either a taxi cab or a metro and bus to the hotels. Taxi fares will start at $8.80 for the Holiday Inn and $11.00 for the GU Conference Center. DC fares are calculated by zones and additional charges come from extra passengers ($1.50), bag handling (.50 per bag), rush hour (7-9:30 am, 4-6:30pm, $1), radio dispatch ($2), and snow emergencies ($2.50 per trip, though not likely to happen in early November). An alternative to a taxi is the Metro Red Line, which you would take from Union Station to Dupont Circle. From Dupont, follow the directions below for the bus.

Metro: The BWI Express/B30 service ($3) runs every 40 minutes, seven days a week, to the Greenbelt Metro Station, which is located on the Green Line of the Washington Metro system. for detailed information, call 202-637-7000 or consult www.wmata.com. Take the Green Line and transfer at Fort Totten to the Red Line going in the direction of Shady Grove. Exit at Dupont Circle and follow bus directions below.

By Train

Amtrak (1-800-USARAIL or www.amtrak.com) trains run regularly to Washington D.C.’s Union Station, located just north of the Capitol. From Union Station, you can take the Metro system to Dupont Circle on the Red Line. From Dupont Circle, follow the directions above for using the Metro from BWI. Cab fare from Union Station starts at $8.80 to the Holiday Inn and $11.00 to the GU Conference Center.

Buses from Dupont Circle

GUTS: The Georgetown University Transportation Shuttle (GUTS) runs separate routes from the Rosslyn Metro and the Dupont Circle Metro to the Leavey Center at Georgetown (where the Conference Center is located) .  The Dupont Circle shuttle can be picked up at 20th and Massachusetts Ave., and the Rosslyn shuttle stops at 19th and Moore Sts.  Each runs every 5 to 20 minutes on weekdays depending on the time of day.  Service is much less frequent on weekends.  For an updated schedule and area maps, go to http://otm.georgetown.edu/guts/index.cfm.  The shuttle is free for conference attendees.  You may be asked to show a picture ID.

Metro Bus: If you are staying at the Holiday Inn Georgetown, you should take a Metro bus from Dupont Circle rather than the shuttle.  Walk to P Street and 20th (just south of Dupont) and take the D2 Glover Park/Dupont Circle bus. Get off at T St. and 35th and walk 2 blocks north.  The Holiday Inn is across Wisconsin Avenue.  The ten-minute ride will cost $1.25.  For an updated schedule, call 202-638-3780 or go to http://www.wmata.com.  From the Rosslyn Metro, take the GUTS bus to the Leavey Center at Georgetown and then follow directions for traveling between the Conference Center and the Holiday Inn.

By Car

For those choosing to drive to the conference, we counsel patience first of all. Our veterans of DC traffic have distilled their wisdom into a route you can view/print in a new window. More directions are available by following this link to the Georgetown University Conference Center; the hotel is just around the corner from the ICC. Drivers should be aware that parking at the Conference Center costs $25/day. There are less expensive Georgetown University lots that cost $12/day, though they are not as convenient to the Center. For detailed information about parking on campus, go to http://otm.georgetown.edu. Parking at the Holiday Inn is $20/night. It is important to note that parking enforcement on D.C. streets is notoriously rigorous.

Traveling between the Hotels

(Important Note: The Conference will be held in the Conference Center Hotel, NOT in the ICC Auditorium, as in past years)
The Conference Center Hotel is about 20 minutes’ walk from the Holiday Inn, but much of the way is uphill. Due to some recent incidents of street crime in Georgetown, it is recommended that people travel in groups after dark or take a taxi. There is also a shuttle bus (GUTS), free to all Georgetown University guests, that runs from the Leavey Center to 2115 Wisconsin Ave., right by the Holiday Inn. The bus leaves from the driveway between the Leavey Center and the rest of the campus. Hours are limited, however. A full schedule can be obtained at http://otm.georgetown.edu/guts/index.cfm. The Holiday Inn also runs a shuttle bus on demand, but since it does not begin operating until 9 am on weekends, rides will be arranged on request by the Conference Director (e-mail below).

If you have any questions, please contact either Jennifer Paxton, the Conference Director, or John Cotts , the Program Director.
